AJE article[edit]

Social networking will switch to the Fediverse faster if people like you participate! The top of your AJE article has FB and Twitter icons, but no link to your Fediverse account. If you don't have one, then now is probably the time to start - it would make your proposal a lot more convincing.

"We now have plenty of options to replicate and improve most of the functions offered by Big Tech, including social networking, file sharing, data collection and analysis, mapping, publishing, etc. NATM could pick the most advanced and scalable solution in each case and commit to its development, providing support for NATM members to implement it."

The block in communities switching to the decentralised Fediverse network and away from FB/Twitter does not seem to be primarily due to a lack of resources, it's rather social inertia. As people discover that some of their friends and some interesting people are active on the Fediverse, it starts making sense to start a progressive shift.

But you're right that providing resources - stable salaries for free-software developers, paying for server space and bandwidth - could help significantly too.

A good place to start proposing your project to the Fediverse is probably https://social.masto.host/@fsfi - the Fediverse account of Free Software Foundation India.

Thanks, Boud[edit]

I will get my Fediverse account started. Of course, I have no control over what social media services Al Jazeera links to. You are right to point out that a lot of this is due to the "network effect" inertia: most people use FB and Twitter, so that's what we end up using to reach an audience.
